2001: A Space Odyssey
What science fiction geek doesn't have this?  But, it is slow and long, by today's standards.  Matinee.
The Abyss Special Edition
The theatrical release didn't make sense.  The director's cut fills in the gaps.   The making of is really good.  Matinee with Dinner.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Very over the top human cartoon humor, but a tight story.  It works and it's fun.   Full Price.

I just couldn't resist.  So stupid it actually works, most of the time.   Rental with Dinner.
Alien
It didn't really grab me when I first saw it, but it has some good bits.  Matinee.
Aliens
OTOH, the first time I saw this one I was on the edge of my seat for the final 45 minutes.   This movie was one of the reasons I got a DVD player.  Full Price with Popcorn.
All That Jazz
Makes you think about the deep subjects.  Matinee.
Any Given Sunday
Mostly wanted to hear the director's commentary.  It's pretty good.  Pay Per View.
Apollo 13
A reasonably accurate depiction of the flight.  I just wish they hadn't implied that Swigert wasn't qualified to be there.  Great commentary tracks.  Full Price.
Awakenings
I have to set aside my machismo and admit the dancing scene still gets to me.  Full Price.
Batman:  The Movie
This movie aged fairly well.  Outrageous camp humor.  Pay Per View.
The Beast
A Russian tank gets lost in Afghanistan and is chased.  Very good characters.   Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks.
Big Trouble in Little China Special Edition
The commentary track is really good, with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell.  The wanna-be hero aspect is fun.  Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks.
The Bounty
I like how this movie makes both sides sympathetic.  I can understand the captain's motives, and can see how they've backfired.  Very slow, though.  Matinee with Dinner.
Braveheart
Sets a tone, but is not historically accurate.  Well-paced and a good story.   A very suck-in-able movie.  Full Price.

An impulse buy I prolly should have resisted.  This movie just doesn't do it for me.  Cable with Dinner.
The Breakfast Club
An interesting setting for a teen angst movie.  Provides lots of opportunities for exposition.  Matinee with Dinner.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Fairly cute movie.  The commentary and documentaries are interesting.  Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks.
Caddyshack Special Edition
Silly humor by a talented ensemble cast.  It works because they had a decent story and they kept the pace up.  Matinee with Dinner.
Castaway
Does an incredible job of realistically showing how a resourceful man would survive.   Extras are really good.  Full Price.
Chicken Run
Lots of homage to old war movies and others.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.   Matinee with Dinner.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Got it mostly because it's expected of a geek.  This movie isn't as smooth as a lot of Spielberg's best.  Matinee.
Contact
A thought-provoking movie about faith.  The commentary tracks are really interesting on this one.  Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks.
Crimson Tide
Another of the movies that shows both sides being right and being wrong.  Not a great movie, but does a good job of provoking thought on that issue.  Matinee.

The light-hearted fun struck a chord with me.  Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks
Courage Under Fire
About redemption, and honoring the fallen by respecting them enough to lay bare the truth.  Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks.

Das Boot
WW II from the perspective of a German U-Boat crew.  Displays courage in the face of hopelessness.  And honor among the front line troups of the German armed forces.   Full Price.

Snake Plisken is just a great anti-hero.  Rental with Dinner.

Excaliber
Birthday present.  It has some interesting bits, but just didn't flow for me.   Cable with Dinner.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
A silly, over the top, bigger than life character and his friends take one last fling before graduation.  Matinee with Dinner.

The story just carries you along.  Somewhat realistic portrayal of the life of a gladiator.  Matinee With Dinner.

The trials of getting a black regiment into battle during the Civil War.  Matinee with Dinner.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The signature Spaghetti Western.  The opening, the music, the characters.  It doesn't have the pace of a modern movie, but it mostly keeps you intrigued.  Full Price.

A gritty look at professional thieves and the cops that chase them.  Great cast and tight story.  Full Price.
Hick Trek the Moovie
I tried to watch it.  Only made it about ten minutes.  Commercial with Popcorn and Drinks.

Despite the fact that they tried to throw every science fiction plot device into one movie, the characters carried it.  And, it looks good on a big screen with good sound.  Matinee.
James and the Giant Peach

The middle of the story, but still building nicely.  Maybe a few too many Just-In-The-Nick-Of-Time bits.  Again, lotsa extras.  Full Price.
The Lord of the Rings:  Return of the King
A finale that lives up to the previous films.  Felt like many more war scenes than the previous.  But they didn't drag on.   It flowed well.  Full Price.

Just behind-the-scenes stuff.  Nothing huge, that I remember.  Cable with Dinner.

Nightmare Before Christmas Special Edition
Good animated musical.  Brings back the feeling of watching Christmas specials as a kid.  Matinee with Dinner.
Office Space
Rides the edge of realistic and bizarre.  It grew on me.  Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks.

Another of the great spaghetti westerns.  Saw a show that said Henry Fonda turned it down, until one of the other actors showed him scripts vs finished products of some of Leone's other films.  Matinee with Dinner.
Paint My Wagon
Mostly works for me, and a bit of a nostalgia trip.  I saw this when I was at a Boy Sprout summer camp.  A lot of good stuff in it.  Rental.

Platoon Special Edition
Got it for the commentary.  Pay Per View.
Poltergeist
A top Spielberg movie.  Great mix of humor with suspense.  Interesting characters.  Matinee.

Quigley Down Under
This one never took off at the box office, but I liked it.  Matinee.
Raising Arizona.
Another over the top human cartoon movie.  Distinctive characters, wild cinematography and the bizarre soundtrack make this movie work.  This is one that people either love or don't understand.  Full Price.

Fun, animated fairy tale, with jokes for kids and adults.  A verisimilitude break in that everyone ends up in the swamp at the end, anyway.  Matinee.
Sixteen Candles
Signature John Hughes film that's over the top, but has heartfelt characters.   Matinee.

Star Wars II:  Attack of the Clones
A little too much shaky love story, but the fight scenes were pretty good.   Especially Yoda.  Matinee with Dinner.
Star Wars IV:  A New Hope
That opening scene was awe-inspiring the first time I saw it.  It's still a lot of fun 28 years later.  This just works as a modern fairy tale.  Full Price.
Star Wars V:  The Empire Strikes Back
The Walkers were great.  And the whole thing worked well, despite the cliffhanger.   Full Price.
Star Wars VI:  Return of the Jedi
The series lost the grungy used look and the actors were in designer cammies.  The droid humor was forced.  The Ewoks were too saccharine.  Matinee.
Stripes
Very quotable movie.  One of my favorites.  Matinee with Popcorn and Drinks.
Tenacious D
Just plain silliness that I had to have.  Rental with Dinner.
Terminator Special Edition

Terminator 2 Special Edition
A sequel that lives up to the original.  Linda Hamilton plays psycho-bitch from hell.  Full Price.
Time Bandits Criterion Collection
Got this mostly because Bruce and Scoo like it so much.  There's good stuff, but I had trouble with it, somehow.  Pay Per View.

Wall Street
Got it mostly for the commentary.  Rental with Popcorn and Drinks.
Wallace & Gromit
Predecessor to Chicken Run.  Love the technique.  Stories are pretty good.   Rental.

I can justify it because it's hockey.  But I have to admit that I find Cynthia Gibb to be totally scrumptious.  Pay Per View with Popcorn and Drinks.
