Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Went with my mom and grandma.  We got there later than we'd intended, so we had to sit on the side.  Wasn't too bad, though.

This movie had a lot of eye-candy for the women.  A lot of females I know really like Johnny Depp and/or Orlando Bloom.  Both in one movie is quite the coup.   The girl was pretty cute, too.

Johnny Depp is great at picking his parts, and this is another really good one.   He went an odd direction with the character.  He made him a bit of a dandy, and slurred his speech, a little.  It was also like he was perpetually drunk.  But it worked.

The special effects were seamless, as far as I could see.  They show in the previews where one pirate reaches through some bars and his hand passes into the moonlight and turning into just a skeleton.  It really worked great.  They used it in several places in the movie, including some chaotic fighting scenes.

Overall, the story moved along pretty well.  I don't remember any boring parts where they had to explain a lot at one time.  The magical elements only took a few sentances to explain.  Some of the back story a few more here and there.  It wasn't very complicated, and they were able to scatter the exposition out so that it didn't occupy a single big chunk of time.

I did a few very minor nits.

Like, how did they find out how to remove the curse?  As in most movies with supernatural elements, they just seem to know, somehow.

Also, near the end, the girl, who has never been on a boat before, seems to be a better tactician than the experienced crew.

And, a lot of the secondary characters were complete doofuses.  Their comic relief might have been handled with a bit more sophistication, methinks.

Overall, though, I came out of the movie thinking it was fun.

On my brother's Total Movie Value Scale, Matinee.  Light-hearted fun.  Fun characters, decent story, good pace, excellent special effects.
