Oh, man. Parker and Stone really pushed the boundaries of tastelessness.
One of my favorite aspects about the movie is the irony of its vulgarity. The plot of the movie is that kids go to a movie that's full of foul language and come out cursing. Basically, Parker and Stone are poking fun at the people who are going to complain about the movie within the very movie they're going to be complaining about. I wish I were that clever.
This movie could almost be called South Park: The Musical. They have a lot of musical numbers. I think all of them are up to their usual standards.
They didn't give in to the temptation of trying to give every character a substantial part in the story. Many characters are here, including of course, the kids, Chef, Mr. Garrison, the kids' parents. Also with major parts are Satan, Saddam Hussein, Terence and Phillip, Mr. Mackey (the school counselor), and Wendy. Characters that weren't included are Tweak (the kid who twitches all the time), Jesus (just one shot of him in uniform in the ranks of the army), the aliens (also in uniform) Mr. Hankey. They did have the kid who flips people off, but he didn't flip anyone off in the movie. That's too bad, because they had a nice opportunity during Mr. Mackey's song :-)
They managed to set the tone of the film's vulgarity within the first couple of minutes. The Terence and Phillip movie starts off with an incredibly vulgar musical number. From that point on, the massive amounts of cursing managed to be comically over the top without going over the line. There were a few times they treaded right on the line, but I found myself laughing along with the rest of the audience.
I was a little disappointed that they decided to include an unnecessary impaling at the end. Just a pet peeve of mine.
They're still coming up with clever ways to kill Kenny.
South Park is sort of The Three Stooges of the Late Nineties. There are those who love the show and those who wonder why. If you like South Park then you'll probably like this. If you don't get it then it'll simply be tacky and obnoxious. On my brother's Total Movie Value Scale, Matinee with Dinner, Popcorn and Drinks.
